Claire Troughton Fine Jewellery Design

How do I commission a piece of jewellery?

We would love to welcome you to the studio for an informal chat. We'll listen to what you like and don't like and offer you the benefit of our knowledge, from metals to gemstones to the designing of the jewellery. We welcome commissions for all types of jewellery for budgets large and small and we feel our jewellery offers greater value for money than mass produced stuff on the high street. Remember a commissioned piece doesn't have to be expensive. We were recently asked to replace a heavy 18ct gold wedding ring that a customer had lost and we were able to provide this plus add a unique hand-engraved design for a third less than the equivalant plain ring on the high street. We like to meet our customers face to face as we feel we can gain a better understanding of your desires, but we have also completed many successful commissions purely by email.

In the first instance some people feel more comfortable discussing things by email before coming to the studio. To provide a few ideas of what you are looking for think about;

         What materials you might want to use - silver, gold, platinum, titanium etc

         Would you like to use coloured stones and/ or diamonds?

        If it is a gift do you know what sort of style the recipient likes? Has she mentioned particularly liking her friend's engagement ring or been drooling over jewellery in a glossy mag? Send us a picture if you can.

        Finger size for rings - if it is for you we can measure your finger or you may have an existing ring in the correct fit that we can measure if it is for a surprise for someone else.

       Do you have a sketch of what you are looking for? You don't need to be artistic. Claire is fantastic at interpreting your ideas. The fabulous 'Bouquet' ring was created after the customer brought in a 2 minute doodle on a yellow paper napkin!

         Do you have a budget in mind?

         Do you have a deadline?  We advise allowing 6 weeks for the commission from start to finish. However if you need the piece more quickly we will be happy to discuss a different timeframe. Simpler pieces can sometimes be completed in 1-2 weeks.

Don't worry if you don't have all this information. We will work with what you do have and provide a price estimate. Please remember that this is only an estimate at this point and the final price can't be agreed until the design is finalised. If this looks good to you then please make an appointment to come into the studio. Here you get a unique glimpse into the life of a jeweller and how we work. Your jewellery will be made just for you in our workshop, not mass produced abroad and you can see all the tools that we will use to make it! We don't have a glossy showroom, so that we can keep overheads to a minimum and pass this saving on to you. If you wish to adjust the budget we will look at alternative materials and stones with you.

After the initial consultation we will provide some sketch designs and a more accurate price. If you're still not sure you are committing to THE perfect engagement ring for her then why not let us help you choose a diamond. You can propose with this and then come back and design the perfect ring together. How romantic!

Once the design is finalised we will require a 50% non-refundable deposit. The final balance is required once the commission is complete and ready for dispatch or collection. If you decide you no longer desire the jewellery once the deposit has been paid we will be unable to refund the deposit as work will have commenced on the jewellery. We may be able to alter it however.
